Volunteers are the heart of our mission. Some bring skills in horsemanship, while others bring skills in leadership, interpersonal connection, and more while supporting our equine assisted services.

Sidewalkers provide physical and emotional support for riders, walking alongside them and their horse during lessons. Using a variety of therapeutic holds, sidewalkers help to maintain the safety of mounted riders while also helping them follow instructions and engage in activities. You may also assist with grooming and tacking the horse prior to the lesson time. Horse experience is not necessary! We do require an additional training for this role.
Horse leaders are responsible for safely handling horses before, during, and after a riding lesson. Our horses benefit greatly from having a person who communicates clearly and effectively. Our goal is to provide a safe riding experience for our participants as well as a pleasant ride for the horse. We require additional trainings for this role to ensure safety standards are met at all times!
There are a lot of moving parts going on during our riding lessons, and volunteers help us keep everything moving smoothly! Tasks in this role may include grooming, tacking, cleaning tack, and bringing horses in and out of the barn.
Horse care volunteers work closely with our Equine Care Staff to keep our herd healthy and happy! You'll help muck out stalls and paddocks, stuff hay nets, ensure horses have access to clean water, and overall keeping our barn neat and hygienic for all of our horses.
We like to joke that "there's always something to do" - and there certainly is! From replacing fence boards to trail maintenance to fixing leaky hoses, we welcome anyone who's a little handy. The work never stops!
If you love our mission but can't make it over to the barn, this is the perfect role for you! We are often out in the community working at various special events and love having friendly faces to assist us. We also host several fundraisers and festivals throughout the year that require lots of hands to make light work!
For folks volunteering with our riding program, we ask you to commit to a scheduled time once per week for the full duration of each session (10 weeks). Typically, you can expect to be here for 3-4 hours. Other roles, like horse care and facility maintenance, a regular commitment is preferred but not required.
Not at all! We will teach you everything you need to know. We have specific trainings for roles where you would be asked to interact with horses one-on-one (ex. leading, grooming, etc.). Your volunteer coordinator will also provide education and support as needed - we're all here to learn from each other!
We do not have a specific age, but a level of maturity is expected and all youngsters MUST be accompanied by an adult/parent/guardian who will be responsible for them while volunteering. It is up to the staff to determine if any volunteer is a good fit for the responsibilities that are asked of them.
Weekend volunteer shifts are reserved for experienced volunteers familiar with our property and safety procedures. We do not have lessons on weekends, so tasks are specific to helping Equine Care Staff with morning/evening chores.
